Betty
On running, reading, and the creatures who show up before dawn.
I planned to run an out and back. Rolling hills with a gradual, steady incline, then turn around for the views and downhills. It was before first light as I chugged uphill. I saw something move up ahead. I fixed my eyes to see what it could be, a white fluffy tail floating in the darkness.
Is that a cat?
I kept running, determined to get closer, but I lost sight of it. Disappointed, I put my head down and charged the rest of the hill—nothing but dark road and silence. When I got to the top, I lifted my eyes.
There it was again—the same white fluffy tail. As I ran closer, the animal turned, and I saw her bold black-and-white stripes in the faint light.
It was clear now: this was no cat. It was a skunk.
I got the hint. I turned around earlier than planned and started thinking about a different route. I was thrilled even with this change in direction. A skunk means spring is getting closer.
It reminded me of a book I read to my son, Brindsley: Brian’s Winter, by Gary Paulsen. While Brian is stranded in the wilderness, a skunk shows up at his shelter. Before he can panic, he tosses her some moose meat. She takes it and goes. This becomes their daily ritual. Brian names her Betty.
As I finished my run, I thought about the skunk I got to see.
I think I will name her Betty.

I love the story of Betty! P.S. Isn't doing anything outdoors before first light, the best?!
For the love of a skunk! Great story
