When I was working in the clinic as a Physical Therapist I loved to remind my clients about their very own medicine cabinet…open 24/7, 7 days a week! (and fight against permanence.)
I would ask— what makes you laugh? When do you feel happy? What do you enjoy doing?
This was the start of finding the keys.
I hope this poem inspires you when you aren’t feeling well—to seek your keys to open your medicine cabinet.
The best part, they are more powerful than the man-made kind!
Move Past Permanence A medicine cabinet lives inside my brain (yours too) Open 24 hours a day— It’s true! Somedays it’s closed tight Niggles and aches Tingles and stiffness I recognize— It’s a needy experience. My cabinet locked shut What can I do? I need a key— One maybe two… A key to soften the pain, turn this day around. Which one will fit? I’ve stopped asking all over town. I know what to do. Step outside, the keys I will find. Breathe in the crisp, cool air. Take in the view. I am not alone I will make it through. I can’t go wrong My body is adaptable, robust, and strong. Self-talk loosens the latch. Breathe, look, listen. Mind and body agree. Nature is a key. Shoulders drop, back loosens, mind eases…Let’s move— I’ll start with a walk. Happy hormones travel too. I hear a cardinal, I see a squirrel leap from tree to tree. I laugh, what fun! Another Key. I notice a stream of water as the banks of snow melt —moving past permanence. My body relaxes This won’t last forever. The maple trees sway. My medicine Cabinet opens wide— Happy hormones dancing and I’ve hit my stride.
Quick reminder! We meet Friday at 11 am (EST) to write together. :) I look forward to seeing you.
