I see something in the distance A shadow at dawn Who is it? Growing curiosity quickens my steps A wild turkey? No. A fox? No. Four shadows here in the open field My eyes adjust— White flashes into view Three deer motionless A fawn rests on the grass Quiet Still My heart leaps to witness this gift Pumps my legs to a crawl I meet their gaze Absorb in wonder
