Saturday's training run at Green Lakes State Park delivered more than just miles. As Felicia and I weaved through the trails during my 20-mile preparation for my upcoming 50-miler, nature offered us an unforgettable gift.
After a few unexpected turns and detours, we finally found ourselves on the trail I had been seeking. When we turned around to make our way back toward the lakes, a movement caught the corner of my eye.
Looking up, I watched as a magnificent bird glided through the air, settling on a bare branch directly above us. What a special privilege to witness.
"Look, an owl!" I whispered (or perhaps shouted) to Felicia, immediately pausing my watch. Time seemed to stop as we stood in reverent silence, watching this majestic creature perched above us. She turned her gaze upon us, her head swiveling with that distinctive owl movement, studying us with equal curiosity.
I noted her features carefully—no ear tufts topped her head. A barred owl, then, not a great horned—both species known to inhabit these woods. She remained silent and still, offering no hoots, just her stunning presence.
What astonished me most was her patience. She remained on that branch as if posing for our admiration. (dang, I wish I had a camera) Just as I found myself wondering what her flight would look like, she spread her impressive wings and glided to a neighboring tree.
Only then did we continue our run, restarting my watch and looking up at her, “Good morning” as we passed. I whispered, Thank you.
Each trail run deepens my gratitude for these wild encounters. There's a world of wonder waiting just beyond our walls. Perhaps you will discover your own magical moment on your next outdoor adventure.
Would you tell us about it?
Thank you, Karen, Tracy, Syl, Leigh, Wayne, Christine, and Brigitte. Keep going!
