                It Lingers

The memory
fresh in his mind.
Does it ever go away?

I watch him
pace the kitchen,
fidget with his food,
toss and turn,
unable to sleep.

Six pounds 
disappeared 
overnight.
 
Three years have passed
the "c" word
lingers
Does it ever go away? 

Even though
he's had no symptoms,
even though
his blood work is normal,
even though
he's in remission.

...will it come back.

I listen.
helpless
powerless
Does this ever go away? 

I resist
the urge 
to talk, fix, leave...

I stay 
hold his hand
and praise the Lord.
