It’s funny how a smell or even a song can take us back in time without a warning. It happened to me on yesterday’s run.
I was thinking about what to have for breakfast as I pumped my arms and legs down the country road when the smell of cow manure filled my nostrils.
The distinct odor sent me back to my childhood on the farm. My memory took a u-turn back in time and inspired the poem of the day.
Tell me about a time this has happened to you? What memory was triggered.
UNFORGOTTEN Manure Odor— Forever stamped In my brain A memory wakes Tumbles out My nose alert The farm I’m a child Unforgotten I don’t remember The smell does Tears, sweat Obedient Shovel, push Head down Carry, lift Discipline Anger, joy Resilience Memories drain I’m back to the run Keep moving Don’t look back The smell It follows me It’s a part of me
