When I was a garden designer in Boston, I built dry stack stone walls and repaired a few historic ones. No mortar, just careful placement of stone on stone with rubble in the middle of the stack for drainage and balance. It’s an art and I had wonderful teachers. My daughter, when she was a kiddo, used to come with me on site and would jump up and down on the top stones/boulders to indicate how solid and secure they were! I love the upper body and quad workout from lifting and positioning field stone. Nothing like it! Here’s an interesting video based on the book, Threads Through the Landscape, New England’s Stone Walls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EBSzr87OtvY
wow Mary B! This is impressive. Are you building this stone wall for your garden? I can imagine it taking much patience and strength but I'm sure the feeling when you're done is tremendous! Thank you for sharing this video...fascinating.
Thanks, Julie, and I haven't worked with stone walls since I moved to Texas 14 years ago, but that may change . . . . a house hunt is underway . . . . 😁 Building dry stacks is similar to putting a large 3-D jigsaw puzzle together with heightened spacial awareness and a thorough understanding of physics, levers, pulling things, hoisting things. It's all such good fun!!
Each Monday, I have your community writing session in my calendar, Julie, but something gets in my way - an audition, an appointment, etc. I am with you in spirit and one day I will get there. Thank you for holding this space for us; you fill our cup of creativity and consistency!
Thinking to "being"
Requires a special movement
Tuning into "now"....
Thank you Clark! Thankful for your presence here.
Favorite ways to stay active and move: cycling, swimming, building dry stack stone walls. 😃
Love this! I’m curious…”building dry stack stone walls”…tell me more?
