Wow, awesome story! And look at all those runners - absolutely brilliant!

I was on SUCH a high when I did my first race - actually it wasn't a race, but my first-ever parkrun. I was on holiday in Cornwall and had decided to just go for it, having recently finished a 'Couch to 5k' program. I was SOOOOOOOO excited, grinned all the way round the course, and didn't stop ONCE! Then the Saturday after I got home from holiday I did a parkrun in my area for the first time, recognised the name of my local town club on some of the running vests, got talking to two people wearing those vests, and joined the club there and then! 🤣

Loved this! Back in the 1990 to 1994 I ran track and cross country in high school. Made many friends from running with others from other schools while competing. Loved reading this today! Thank you!

Good morning Alford! I'm so happy this brought up some great memories for you. I loved running cross country and track in school as well. Great friendships and lots of stories. :) Thanks again and happy pottery making. I'll also be in touch. I would love to bring the kids to your shop to see you make pottery if that's possible? A great field trip :)

Thanks for the time travel nudge.

This brought me back to the late 1970s when I was in high school and joined the no-cut track team. My sport at the time was swimming but high schools didn't field teams in that sport. I was never quick, but there was a new event that I could run: 2-miler which none of our distance runners (milers) wanted to do.

I made a new friend in the 2-mile category (she was a hurdler but there were too many good hurdlers on the team for her to compete) so we trained together. We just went out and ran in the fields near our high school -- who knows how far. I told stories to her as we ran to pass the time, and we had a blast together.

I had the idea to enter a community race and convinced my friend to come along with me. At that time, the lowest mileage race was a 10k (5ks became popular much later) so we entered this race out near the local university about 45 minutes north of town. We ran, we got lost (there were few markings), and somehow managed to finish with the help of the police escort car behind us (which may have been there for the half-marathoners, not us). It was a great day!

Thank you for sharing!

The first time I ran with others was when I was in first grade. I was invited to a blue bird party with class friends. We ran all over their big yard! It felt wonderful! I even told my doctor about it the next day when he came to my house.

I saw his face change from a smile to anger. He left the room to talk to my mom. Later, when he had gone to his car and drove away, Mom turned to me with anger as well. She said she only wanted to let me have some fun, and I tattled on her ( I didn't mean to tattle! The joy just leaked out..).

You see, I had developed rheumatic fever. I had to stay in bed! There was no real fever, it was a heart condition. When my brothers and I were outside, THEY got to run. I could only watch from my blanket in the grass. I was not allowed to go to school most days, and spent the whole 4th grade at home in bed.

But I will always remember the pure joy of running in my friend's big yard that day!

I'm so glad you got to run with your friends too. I'm sorry you had to miss out on playing during 4th grade. Thank you for sharing with us here Claudette.

I trained for 6 months so I could give myself a birthday gift at age 64. The hardest most exhilarating year of my life. Never to be forgotten...
