Brava, Julie! You guys are lucky to have such a beautiful fall. Fifty miles is A LOT, but it sounds like you’re up to it (easy for a non-runner to say, right?).

Do I spy my friend Amie in the top photo?

Yes that’s Amie! I was so happy she joined me last week and we had some time to catch up too. :) Thank you Ruth for being here.

It was 19° when I attempted JFK 50. My second ultra. The hose to my bladder froze. I wore road shoes and quickly regretted my decision. I'd recommend hybrid shoes made to provide protection on the trails and respond to pavement. Be prepared for anything. The scenery is spectacular. Enjoy.

I was going to say trail shoes all the way—my footgear of choice for the AR50 way back when. Wish we’d had hybrids then!

I was thinking the same until I reviewed the course, trail, towpath, then road. :) Hybrid sneaker search is on. What fun!

Hi Elaine!

Thank you so much for your guidance here. I'm looking up hybrid sneakers now, I didn't even think of this. Genius!

You're right...prepare for it all. LOL...I might be bringing a suitcase just for that reason. I can't wait to take in the scenery.

Any other thoughts please share. :) I'm all ears.

Good luck with your running and thanks again. Super helpful.

I wear zero drop shoes (altra) and recently bought a pair of OutRoad that are supposed to transition from road to trail. There are others.

Thank you Elaine for sharing your sneakers. I’m going to look up OutRoad. I’ve been checking out Craft hybrid options. My feet are finicky…I need all the options I can get and hope one option works. LOL
