I also used to pack eggs on a chicken farm when I lived in Georgia. 30,000 birds. I stood at a table and flatted eggs as they came in on an egg belt. My fastest was 120 eggs a minute (yes, points down, biggest eggs in a separate flat on the shelf, cracked but not leaking eggs up on the shelf in a different flat, very dirty eggs in the bucket to be washed).
If they came in faster than that, they would pile up and threaten to fall off the table, so I had to pull the handle to stop the belt. Stopping the belt was not the best, because all the chickens were still laying, meaning more eggs on the belt!
I loved the chicken farm, and raising my boys there. Fond memories!!
Oh wow! Thank you so much for sharing Claudette! You are amazing! Enjoy your day! Will you be able to go out to see the eclipse? My children are super excited and me too.
I'm a big egg fan. My hens produce them daily. I make my hubby gather them because the rooster has it in for me but I'm thankful for the ability to walk out my door and have fresh ones.
Unlike many small family farms, “big” agriculture and factory farming never hear the sweet cry/song of a newly hatched baby chicken. There must be a better way to feed the world. John Robbins book, Diet for a New America changed my eating habits forever. Btw, no sermon intended here, just sharing my feelings. ♥️
Thank you Clark for sharing. I hear you. The book that opened my eyes was Food Fix by Mark Hyman, MD. Have you hear of it? I'm going to check out the one you mention here. Thank you. I appreciate you sharing.
Julie 🐝 ! Small world re Mark Hyman, M.D. Almost 15 ya I bought a full kit of his thinking called “The UltraMind Solution.” It included his book of that title, a DVD, a workbook, and sheets for recording our answers. A valuable product imho. We still have the full kit, and he was focusing on “inflammation” way back then. An often overlooked aspect of modern diets.
What an egg-citing topic today! Long ago and far away, as a child, our family kept Rhode Island Reds for eggs and later to eat. Today, we try to find eggs from free range hens fed an organic diet. Fresh blades of grass and bugs. Those in the Cicada zone will be living “high on the bug.”
I love scrambled eggs, deviled eggs, sliced hard-boiled in fresh greens salads, and French Toast! On to the best of days! (Today!)
Hi Gary! Thank you so much for sharing your story here. :) I'm so happy we recently found a local farmer to buy fresh eggs from. I can see the difference even though I don't eat them my family does.
Have a wonderful day! :) The sunshine is shining and we are excited to see the eclipse!
Wow Clark! That's amazing you met him in person. I'm glad you say that because that's the impression I got from reading several of his books. (Big heart and brain) Thank you Clark. Another book to enjoy and grow from. yay!
Yes, as a child I helped my Dad to gather the eggs from the nests. It was fun if the hens didn't attack! (ouch). I love eggs sunny side up and of course, deviled eggs!
My Sister and her husband run a little homestead and my nephew raised chickens his whole life. He would enter them in the fair each year and I would go help the little guy feed them all in the chicken barn. As he grew into a big guy he won a few nice prizes for his chickens. He is in University now and so I just collect the eggs now when I visit my dear sister and her family. But I have great memories of my nephew the chicken man.
Hi Al, Thank you for sharing your egg memories here with us! I love this "chicken man". Folks would call my grandpa the "egg man". :) It's so cool how certain words, like eggs, can bring up all sort of memories.
Eggs are my favourite food, and I eat absolutely tonnes of them. I enjoy omelettes and very buttery scrambled eggs, but my favourite eggs are my two soft-boiled eggs every morning for breakfast. There's no better start to the day, and I always look forward to it. Oh, and if I'm hungry during the day I'll often have a hard-boiled egg as a snack.
Both, in fact! Mum gives me half a dozen eggs whenever they've got too many, and we buy eggs from the Village Stores (they're from a local free-range egg farm) a couple of times a week. Yesterday I got home to find a box of eggs left for us by our next-door neighbours - they have several bantams and a couple of pretty large chooks, and the box contains five tiny eggs and one ginormous one. I am THRILLED!
HA! I'm glad it made you curious enough to open. :) I hope your running is going well Raz and life. I hope to catch you one of these days for the meet ups. I feel bad I haven't been able to join.

This is amazing!! That's funny about the rooster. I'm glad your hubby and gather them with no problems.
My grandpa had a chicken farm and we were so lucky to have eggs available to us anytime. Thank you for sharing and being here Mombadear. :)
Freedom to be safe
To grow up like most humans
Free from harvesting….

Thanks for kickstarting my brain today.
You bet Gary! Thank you for being here.

Judy Collins wrote “Bread and Roses” that has this verse:
“As we go marching, marching
In the beauty of the day”
There’s lots more to the song. I hope marching isn’t required for viewing the eclipse. Maybe an “Eclipse skeedaddle?” Enjoy this and every day!
“Eclipse skeedaddle?” love this! Yes we had a great watch...the clouds moved out of the way just in time and wow did it get dark here! So cool!
I have met Mark Hyman after a lecture years ago. Big brain, big hearted guy.
Diet for a New America is a real page turner. You won’t be able to stop reading. PROMISE.

Oh what a great memory Faith. Thank you for sharing here with us and hugs to you. Enjoy the eclipse. :)
I am not taking 14 three year olds out! Someone might take off the glasses. Maybe I can see the next one.
I didn't think about that! Smart!

Hi Rebecca, Wonderful. Do you get your eggs from your parents? Or do you shop local? It's amazing the difference in the yolk color.
Both, in fact! Mum gives me half a dozen eggs whenever they've got too many, and we buy eggs from the Village Stores (they're from a local free-range egg farm) a couple of times a week. wow! Amazing. Enjoy your eggs this week. :)
I eat a lot of eggs and I just went and checked my organic eggs and sure enough they were all pointed down. Whew!
Way to go Karen! I was so happy to learn this and my Grandpa had a small egg farm. I guess I didn't retain that knowledge if it was shared with me.
Just from the title, before I'd even opened this story, I thought, "Eggs?"
And then!
