hi Julie, toenails are useless. Ultrarunner Pam Smith (WS100 champ from a decade ago) had hers permanently removed. I would not go through that procedure because it's painful. But my nails have pretty much stopped growing due to three decades of trauma. My big toes' toenails grow just a bump of thick hardened nail toward the bottom of the nail bed and then stop there. The others are barely there and no longer attach to the nailbed, so I cut them back as soon as they grow a little bit.
Sarah! Thank you so much for your response. This is exactly what my doc was talking to me about...I had no idea this was a thing. My nails are doing the same thing you described... thick and hard and raised up...not flat at all. Thanks again for the message. Hope your running is going well! What's next for you?
I was talked out of sizing up when I was buying a new pair of running shoes, and a toenail paid the price first time out! I did (and do!) still wear the shoes, but not to run in (I went back and DID size up). After I'd stopped being cross about it, I was kind of proud of my black toenail, and I"m glad to say that the new nail which grew underneath it was perfect. 👌
I’m so happy your toenail grew back correctly and no problems! YAY! I’m glad you went back and got the right size sneakers. It really is important. I hope these toenails will grow back right with some help but if not I have options. :) Have a great night Rebecca.
Thank you so much for sharing this. I was just thinking about the pressure in my right big toe from Saturdays run when I opened this. It's decreased some, but ugh, still nagging and turning darker. I'm still hesitant to call the podiatrist (fear of being told to stop running). But know I should. I will, today or tomorrow. Keep on me, my feet need help.
Good morning Felicia, Go to my Doc. He loves runners and in all the years I've worked with him (since 2016!) He has not once told me to stop running. He gives me a big grin and says, "Let's keep you running, let's figure this out." He's the BEST! Go see him!!
You're amazing! They must have appreciated your singing. I'm happy to hear there are sections on this 50 miler where spectators can hang and cheer. It will be an energy lifter. Have a great Thursday.
You have tough toes so that replaces the toenails. 😀
yes! LOL The pointe classes definitely helped. :)

Grand to Grand Ultra Sept 22 - 28! Google "Pam Smith ultrarunner and toenail removal" and I'm sure her past posts about it will come up.
Wow Sarah! You're amazing. Thank you again for your wealth of knowledge in your book and being here. I appreciate it. Researching Pam Smith now. :)

I’m just back from cycling round tiree while others ran an ultra. I also sang to some of them. Heroes all.

God bless your toes!!
Thank you Claudette!! :) I'm in good hands. Have a blessed day.
