Mile 20

Staring Down a Dream
6

Hi! I’m so glad you are here. Welcome to my new subscribers! I’m so glad to have you with us. Every Thursday I read a poem out loud and Fridays are when we gather to write together. I hope you can join us tomorrow 1/13/23 at 11 am (EST). The link is posted below.

My aunt took this picture of me on my way to the finish.

As I finish the last of my edits for my next book, Staring Down a Dream— A Mom, a Marathoner, a Mission—I find myself wanting to write more poems about my experience racing The Boston Marathon.

Heartbreak Hill comes to mind and the poem out loud is inspired by this Hill!

What is your dream? Mine was to run The Boston Marathon and it took me over 2 decades for it to come true…don’t give up!

                 Mile 20

Thank you Heartbreak Hill
Running the climb takes will.
I didn’t walk but if
my legs could talk—
“We are powerful, we are ready.”

Mind and body are on the same page.
Ready to engage—
Heartbreak Hill in front of me
Repeat my mantras— the key

Pump my arms, lift my knees
I will keep my mind at ease
My dream is finally here
Listen to the crowd cheer

Goosebumps rise
My eyes on the prize
CITGO sign I see
Nothing will stop me

The finish line is near
A ruckus is all I hear
I will charge ahead— run to win
Finish strong with a big grin.
