“Resistance will tell you anything to keep you from doing your work. … If you take Resistance at its word, you deserve everything you get. Resistance is always lying and always full of shit.”
—Steven Pressfield|the War of Art
Writing gives me..this was the prompt I invited you to use this week. I was honored to read your thoughtful, beautiful, and generous responses. It’s truly a privilege.
I shared this prompt with my children—
I asked Brindsley, “What does writing give you?”
He replied, “Peace, fun, and I get to escape into my own little story.”
Delaney said, “Happiness, entering into a new world and opening my imagination.”
I forgot to mention...writing gives me time with my children.
They’re writing — our daily practice together.
We all sit at our desks or outside at the picnic table creating stories and poems. They’re noticing the mighty pen and where it can take them.
Writing has so much to give us.
It’s wonderful.
All we need is some paper and a pen—off we go. It sounds simple, like running or walking. Lace-up your sneakers and get outside. One foot in front of the other.
Yet I recognize the resistance both create.
The resistance for me sounds like —It’s so dark out. It’s too early. You’re tired. You’re achy. Can’t you run later?
I notice the resistance to sit in my chair, open my notebook, and write.
This is stupid. No one wants to read this. You don’t know how to write poems.
Resistance shows up every time.
Oh hello there…
I’m less surprised.
I nod.
Writing has given me this too…to practice understanding and facing the resistance.
Keep going and doing your important work,
Julie
